Hot tooth

Can you drink hot chocolate after a tooth extraction? What is hot tooth syndrome? Why are my teeth sensitive to hot food? It can be described as a patient, sitting in the waiting room, sipping on a bottle of cold water to relieve the pain. The term “ hot tooth ” is a common name given to an infected tooth which exhibits severe pain.


Sometimes hot teeth have living nerve tissue inside of them, but the extent of inflammation prevents the tooth from being able to recover.

Such teeth are generally diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis. Many times hot teeth will no longer have living. In some cases despite the area being profoundly “numb”, on commencement of treatment (root treatment ) some residual sensation is still present. A hot tooth is one in which the nerve is alive, but badly inflamed.

The pulp cannot recover from the insult and damage. I must say how complicated such a situation can get. Some nerves in the tooth are irritated and inflame causing severe toothache and sensitivity.


You have swelling on the gum area around the tooth. The tooth may be sensitive to touch however there is no pain when drinking hot or cold liquids. The pain may be severe but when you brush or poke around the area the pain is relieved. This type of pain is usually indicative of a periodontal abcess not a root canal problem.


Dentin is what forms part of your inner tooth , surrounding the pulp. You notice a very ol large amalgam filling on the tooth which had been done over 2o years ago. No recent restorative changes in the area is reported by the patient.
