Teeth clenching pain

Can clenching your teeth cause these symptoms? Is it bad to clench your teeth? How to stop teeth grinding and clenching? What causes teeth clenching while awake? Sleep bruxism is considered a sleep-related movement disorder.


Teeth clenching , also known as bruxism, is a condition in which you gnash or grind your teeth.

It occurs mainly at night during sleep (sleep bruxism). If you have sleep bruxism, you may disturb the sleep of your partner. Also, it can wake you up, only to realize that the sound you are hearing is your teeth clenching. A habit of grinding teeth in the night may cause pain that feels like an earache. This headache pain because there is inflammation in the jaw closing the temporalis muscle located on both sides of the head.


This muscle is easily found by placing your fingertips on your temples, clench your teeth hard and you’ll feel the contractions. Bruxism pain refers to the tooth or mouth pain due to teeth grinding and teeth clenching , as a result of any type of forceful contact between the teeth. Teeth grinding and teeth clenching are conditions that affect teeth and mouth tissues causing several types of pain.


Bruxism pain symptoms or symptoms of clenching teeth at night in sleep Some people can make a sound during grinding or clenching , but some people may not create any noticeable noise.

When you wake up in the morning, you may have sore jaws and a dry headache. Increased tooth sensitivity to hot or cold foods and during biting. One may have sore and stiffed neck and jaws.


Toothache due to clenching teeth is typically because of tooth sensitivity to cold or hot foods. Individual suffering from toothache due to clenching of teeth cannot exactly pinpoint a specific tooth that is causing pain. They become sore and tired from overuse, and disorders can arise from long-term clenching. However, teeth grinding can cause jaw pain , headaches, wear on the teeth , and TMD. Open your mouth two more times, but half as wide. Place an object (pencil) that is about ½ an inch thick between your teeth. Gently move your jaw from one side to another.


Repeat this several times. Common side effects of daytime bruxism (jaw clenching ) include facial pain , earache, and headache. If it continues for a long time without intervention, teeth may become loose. Daytime bruxism is less likely to wear down the teeth or cause them to break off – this is more likely to occur with nocturnal bruxism.


This pain is often misdiagnosed as a tension headache or a sinus headache when in actuality, it is a result of a temporomandibular disorder (TMD). According to Steven Pohlhaus, DDS, the muscles can ache due to many causes. The grinding is generally harmless at first but its continual occurrence can damage your dental health and cause pain.

The first signs are usually a sensation of pain on one side of the jaw or general teeth soreness. Clenching or grinding (see Box to Right) while awake is especially common during periods of concentration, anger, or stress, and often occurs without a person being aware of it. Treatment Some of the symptoms of bruxism , such as facial pain , dull headache, earache, will often disappear when you stop grinding your teeth. Also, if your child complains of ear pain without evidence of an ear infection, bruxism may be involved.


With young children, offer a little relaxation before bed to help soothe them. Consider a warm bath for them, a gentle massage, warm milk and a relaxing bedtime story. A dental exam may detect other disorders that can cause similar jaw or ear pain , such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, other dental problems or health conditions.
