Brain abscess from tooth infection

Can an abscess tooth cause a brain aneurysm? Can the infection from an absess tooth kill you? A brain abscess forms from a collection of pus and dead cells resulting from infection.

Medically reviewed by Drugs. A periapical tooth abscess usually occurs as a result of an untreated dental cavity, an injury or prior dental work. Dentists will treat a tooth abscess by draining it and getting rid of the infection.

They may be able to save your tooth with a root canal treatment, but in some cases the tooth may need to be pulled. Bacteria from the infection can spread to the heart and lead to a condition called bacterial endocarditis. Abscessed teeth can cause an infection in the face and jaw called Ludwig’s angina which can severely restrict the airways. The infection can spread to the brain through blood vessels and lead to a brain abscess.

This condition is an inflammation of the membranes near the spinal cord and brain. If bacterial infection is left untreate it could move to the bloodstream and spread to the spinal cord and around the brain. Here is a simplistic way of looking at things.

When you have a tooth infection , germs can easily enter the bloodstream.

The germ then travels around the body and cause mishaps on your organs unless your immune system is able to block it. For example one brain -related problem you could contract as a result of teeth abscess is brain abscess. Brain abscess (or cerebral abscess ) is an abscess caused by inflammation and collection of infected material, coming from local (ear infection , dental abscess , infection of paranasal sinuses, infection of the mastoid air cells of the temporal bone, epidural abscess ) or remote (lung, heart, kidney etc.) infectious sources, within the brain tissue. Tooth infections rarely get to a point that they will affect the brain. The natural path of infection for the teeth is to drain either into the mouth through the gum, through the bone into the soft tissue spaces of the face, or into the facial spaces of the neck.

On the rare occasion that a tooth infection reaches the brain. Tissue forms around this area and creates a mass, or abscess. The germs that cause a brain abscess can reach the brain through the blood. Or, they enter the brain directly, such as during brain surgery. In some cases, a brain abscess develops from an infection in the sinuses.

The source of the infection is often not found. Doctor on Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment, and More: Dr. Fisher on symptoms of brain infection from tooth : Sinusitis spreading to brain is very serious. Severe headache, fever, neck stiffness, neurological symptoms. When bacteria, fungi, or other pathogens enter the brain , a mass of macrobiotic organisms enclosed in a membrane can form around the infection.

What Is a Brain Abscess ? While this protective membrane forms to isolate the infection , it creates swelling in the brain.

How Do Pathogens Get in the Brain ? It usually occurs when bacteria or fungi enter the brain tissue after an infection or severe head injury. Although the risk of developing a brain abscess is extremely low in Englan it is a life-threatening condition and should be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible. If bacteria spread from an abscess in a lower tooth , the swelling can constrict the airway.

Some patients underestimate how serious the condition can be. In the brain , an abscess may be in one or more areas. An abscess is a pocket of infection.

It is a serious and life-threatening condition that needs to be treated right away. Treatment includes antibiotic therapy to kill the bacteria that cause the infection. In people with a large abscess , an operation to drain the abscess may be carried out. If this happens you are suffering from a brain abscess.

Visit a dental practice in Hornsby for routine visits or even for the slightest tooth problem so this can be prevented. Because when a tooth infection spread to the brain , symptoms can be quite startling. It isn’t all that easy to diagnose a brain abscess at first.
