Deep cleaning for gum disease

When does gum disease require a deep cleaning? How is professional dental cleaning done to treat gum disease? What is the best remedy for gum disease? How much does a dental deep cleaning cost?


Aside from easing the disorder , deep cleaning also helps prevent gum disease from becoming more severe.

Deep cleaning is a non-invasive. These areas are not easily reached with regular tooth brushing, flossing or regular dental cleanings. During the procedure, we numb the infected areas and carefully clean away any calcified build up or biofilm that has collected along the roots of your affected teeth.


By removing the tartar and plaque from below your gums , your gums can heal and return to their normal position beside your teeth. While some patients may be predisposed to periodontal disease and may need routine deep cleanings , most patients only require them on an as-needed basis. A deep cleaning is actually a specific procedure performed by your dental hygienist to treat gum and periodontal disease. However, a referral to a periodontal specialist may be required to treat more advanced cases.


This is a deep-cleaning, nonsurgical procedure, done under a local anesthetic, whereby plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line are scraped away (scaling) and rough spots on the tooth root are made smooth (planing).

Scaling and root planing. Once you finish the deep cleaning, usually completed in two seperate appointments, you will be done with the deep cleaning part and be placed on usually a 3-month periodontal maintenance recall. Every office is different though so check. Hopefully your gum pockets will be about 3mm deep instead of the 4-6mm they were before. During this process, they will scrape off all the tartar from above and below the gum line,.

In certain clinical cases, laser gum treatment offers better clinical with shorter treatment times and shorter recovery while reducing discomfort and perhaps reducing the need for more.
