The small flap of skin that extends from between the middle of your lower front two teeth and the lip is called a frenum. If the frenum is too tight it can cause the gums to pull away from the teeth. For areas that suffer gum recession due to a tight frenum, simply snipping the frenum can reduce the stress that it placed on the gum margin.
Gum recession is the process where the gums pull away from the teeth. The gums are the soft, pink, fleshy part inside the mouth that lies below the teeth. Its role is to protect the teeth’s roots as well as help secure the teeth.
When the gums start to recede, it can cause some problems for the roots of your teeth. As the gums pull away from the teeth , openings or gaps occur between the teeth and gums. When teeth are healthy, gum tissue fits around each tooth like a cuff. In a tooth with gum recession, the gum tissue has pulled away from the tooth. This can leave the tooth root exposed.
Since the root surface does not have a hard enamel covering like the crown (top) of the tooth , the root may become sensitive to hot and cold. Also, the exposed tooth root is more at risk for decay. Not only can periodontal disease cause the gums to pull away from the teeth , but also cause them to bleed easily and become re swollen and tender.
Body piercing of the lip or tongue.
Jewelry can rub the gums and irritate them. Receding gums can be quite alarming. Not only are they painful, they can also lead to pockets, or gaps, between your teeth and gum line, allowing the build up of harmful bacteria.
When your gums recede, it gives rise to gaps between your teeth and gum line. This makes it easy for bacteria to build up and survive there. I can feel the dip of the tooth (the part that is normally not exposed) with my tongue. I looked in the mirror, and there is a little gap. This exposes the tooth and its root, and creates gaps between the gum line and teeth.
Bacteria can grow in these gaps. If you do not maintain healthy brushing and flossing habits, plaque develops. That plaque contains bacteria and it sticks to your teeth and hardens. The hardened plaque is known as tartar and tartar will cause your gums to actually pull away from your teeth.
Common surgical treatments include: Flap surgery. As your gums recede, more of the tooth enamel shows. What’s more, receding gums can leave pockets between the gums and the teeth and create a super-hospitable environment for bacteria to harbor. Then, as our immune system fights the infection, the connective tissue and bones that hold teeth properly begins to break down. Finally, without effective treatment, the gums , connective tissue and teeth are destroyed.
Our immune system fights the bacteria as the plaque spreads and grows below the gum line and starts to break down the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. In addition, people with severe periodontal disease can develop gum recession as they lose their underlying bone.
Clenching and grinding is another cause of gum recession. The excess forces on teeth cause the teeth to flex microscopically, causing gum and bone recession. Everything above this point of attachment is free to move, and between the flap of gum tissue and the tooth is a deep crypt which tends to trap debris and bacteria.
