Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis ( ANUG ) is a common, non-contagious infection of the gums with sudden onset. The main features are painful, bleeding gums , and ulceration of inter-dental papillae (the sections of gum between adjacent teeth). Symptoms are acute pain, bleeding, and foul breath. The condition is caused by poor oral hygiene combined with poor nutrition and weak immune system. Most other gum diseases do not flare up as quickly as AUG does.
This is a very painful problem and patients are often a little distressed by the appearance and symptoms: Gums that are affected are bright red in colour and really sore to touch, often to sore to brush.
Necrotizing” means that gingival tissue is destroyed by the condition. These are the common signs of this condition. Trench mouth is a severe gum infection caused by a buildup of bacteria in the mouth.
It’s characterized by painful, bleeding gums and ulcers in the gums. Your mouth naturally contains a balance of healthy bacteria, fungi, and viruses. However, poor dental hygiene can cause harmful bacteria to grow.

Ulcerative – refers to the fact that with this condition ulcers and sores often appear on the gums. Periodontitis is chronic inflammation involving the supporting tissues around the teeth with largely irreversible tissue damage. In rare cases, a condition called acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis ( ANUG ) can develop suddenly. The symptoms of ANUG are usually more severe than those of gum disease and can include: bleeding, painful gums.
Soreness and pain are characteristically felt at the margin of the gums. This disease causes destruction of the gum tissues leading to build up of the dead or necrotic tissue. It is also known as ‘trench mouth’. It occurs from a build-up of plaque caused by bad bacteria in the mouth.
It usually presents as bleeding gums after brushing. As gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease (gum disease) it can be reversed if treated early. The plaque triggers an immune response, which, in turn, can eventually lead to the destruction of gingival, or gum, tissue.
Gingivitis is the term given to an inflammation of the gums. It may also, eventually, lead to further complications, including the loss of teeth.
In some cases of gum disease , root planing (debridement) may be required. This is a deep clean under the gums that gets rid of bacteria from the roots of your teeth. Before having the treatment , you may need to have a local anaesthetic (painkilling medication) to numb the area.
