Retained root infection

If the retained root remains it will either stay frozen in the bone forever or work its way out where it can be removed. Retained root however may cause infection of the jaw or osteitis. There are up to four roots to a tooth.

It appears as though the channel I prepared for the implant is a bit closer than I wanted to the root tip and the dental implant is close to the root tip. Should I expect complications?

Root tip fracture can occur during the extraction of teeth. A similar decision is made when retained root fragments are found incidentally on oral radiographs. Again there is no mention of pain, infection or abscess associated with the retained roots.

Another referral letter is sent to the dental hospital and two months later the roots are removed along with URunder a general anaesthetic. I lost the tooth eight years ago and have never experienced any pain from the root but my dentist told me that it had to come out before the bridge was fitted over it. This article aims to highlight the risk benefit matrix of the removal or retention of retained root fragments , in light of the present evidence base.

Some roots can maintain blood supply and remain as a vital, nonpainful portion of the jaw (Figure 1). Since root tips sit adjacent to neurovascular structures,.

The root was in my lower. Acute infection Infection of the retained root is uncommon. Pus extruding from the socket rather than pain is an indication for root retrieval. A Cone Beam CT (CBCT) may be required for surgical planning. Over the last months, no root has been removed for reasons of acute infection.

Lastly, it may cause severe pain and become reinfected or remain in a state of chronic infection, where it may suddenly cause pain and swelling. When remnants of a tooth root remain as the result of an incomplete prior extraction, the removal of this residual root , is covered under this dental procedure code. From a procedural standpoint, the surgical extraction of a residual tooth root is a straightforward event. This is because the blood clot covers and protects the newly exposed bone in the tooth socket and prevents it becoming infected. If the newly exposed bone in the tooth socket become infected after an extraction, this is called a dry socket.

A dry socket is a very painful complication of a tooth extraction. In cases that involve the upper teeth, extraction procedures that complicate removal of root tips are usually left alone due to the possibility of rupturing the maxillary air sinus. Inflammation and infection in the jaw bone is not often apparent on a dental xray until it has become moderate or quite large. Adult full mouth series of radiographs discovers an infected retained root tip from a previous extraction. Patient was not aware of the retained root but stated it feels weird down there sometimes.

In conclusion, actinomycosis is an infection that can be confused with other commonpathologic conditions. How-ever, it should be differentiated because of the need for long-term antibiotic therapy.

Evidence of Infection This particular study also found that of retained roots had radiographic evidence of infection. A retained root tip may become infected or, at least, act as a foreign body, creating significant inflammation. This “flap” of tissue allows a dentist to gain access to the bone along the side of the jaw that is encasing the tooth root. Dental Root which was left behind when the tooth was extracted.
