Abscess under crown

What can cause an abscess from a crown? What are the dangers of an abscess tooth? How can you cope with a tooth abscess? Why would an old root canal start causing pain? Not sure how to word this.

I have developed and abscess under a crown with a root canal on my lower right molar second from the end.

I am now seeing an endodonist to treat the abscess and he has warned me about a possible crack, or fracture that would require removal of the tooth. I did have an exposed root that just recently had a bonding agent applie but my question is whether my abscess could had been caused by the root being exposed for several weeks.
